What is Ham Radio to you? Is it a service? Maybe Its a hobby. Or is it a learning experience?
Well its all of that and more to me. Its a community I belong to so that I can help others who may be in need in straining times. Its also a learning experience because it teaches me something new every day. As for the hobby portion thats because Its a part time thing that allows me to meet new people and experiment with new things. Now why is it more than that to me? Well because Its something that I picked up from my grandparents, an heirloom you might say. Something that will stay with me always even long past the time of their passing. Now thats one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given, the ability to share fond memories in a passion shared by not just my grandparents and I, but my friends and family as well. It is also something that I can someday share and pass on to my own children and grandchildren. what more could one ask for?
Well Thats my story (now I no some stories will be similar as I have family on this site, lol) whats yours? THX and 73 de KB3LAZ

Ham radio to me is a way to meet new people, make life long friends and help others get into the hobby Yeah its a hobby for me, although it is a whole lot more. I have made so many contacts around the world during my time in the hobby and I have enjoyed every bit of it. My son who is 11 going on 20 is interested in getting his ticket also so that is awsome. It will be nice to have another family member in the hobby. I have no other immediate family in it but having my son will be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now to just get him to study!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Service, yes. Hobby, absolutely. Learning experience, never-ending. I am just now getting going with it but i have been around it for years. I have grown up watching my grandparents, uncles, cousin and my own father and have realized it does a number of things. all the way from bridging a gap between people all across the world that would have never met by any other means. brought family members together through a common interest that would have never had anything in common any other way. From bridging to bonding and from hobby to putting a stop to death by boredom, amateur radio definitely has a meaningful purpose to everyone.
But for me it has been the same since the first thought of joining the family hobby, A means to be closer with those in my life and those who have passed.

SHJ, pass on this post to your son. I was licensed in amateur radio when I was 16 (got it in the mail the same day as my driver's license because I really wanted to do a public service that was also fun. That was a hard decision, whether to drive or pick up the microphone that first day I earned both licenses. When my younger sister saw how much fun it was, she decided to study and earned her ticket at the age of 10. Now that the morse code requirement is gone, it is even easier for young folks to earn a radio license.
Now my sister, mother, and I are much older (my mom and I took a radio class together) I have served the public in a variety of ways. My sister and mother advanced in the study and now outrank me. One of these days I will pick up the book and earn General (I'm only a code techy). In fact I will make your son a promise that if he earns his license (any class) I will promise to upgrade myself to the next level so he doesn't pass me up (ha ha).
